The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education today released district results for the spring 2023 Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) tests. The results showed a slight decline for the Fall River Public Schools over 2022.
22 percent of students taking the English Language Arts (ELA)test either exceeded or met expectations, the same as in 2022. Fewer students partially met expectations compared to a year ago (41 percent vs. 45 percent in 2022) while more students did not meet expectations this year than last (37 percent vs. 33 percent in 2022).
Those exceeding or meeting expectations on the Math test were slightly lower this year than last (19 percent vs. 20 percent in 2022). Those partially meeting expectations in math were also down from a year ago (44 percent vs. 47 percent in 2022). Those not meeting expectations rose to 37 percent this year compared to 33 percent in 2022.
18 percent of those taking the Science, Technology and Engineering test either exceeded or met expectations, the same as last year. 45 percent partially met expectations (vs. 44 percent in 2022) while 37 percent did not meet expectations (the same as in 2022).
The district did make significant progress in curbing chronic absenteeism, which is defined as students missing 10 percent or more of their days in school. In the K-8 schools, 31.1 percent of students were chronically absent, compared to 43.5 percent in 2022. At Durfee High School, 48.6 percent of students were chronically absent, compared to 58.4 percent last year.
