The four remaining candidates on the preliminary election ballot for mayor were together for the first time at a debate sponsored by the Fall River Reporter last night.

Incumbent mayor Paul Coogan and challengers Carlos Cesar, Gabriel Boomer Amaral, and Michael Vandal shared varied viewpoints on how they would lead the city if elected.

When it comes to combating crime and keeping the city safe, Mr. Cesar said that to start, the police department needs to add more officers.

Mr. Amaral said an increase in staffing within the department is only part of the solution

Mayor Paul Coogan said even though Fall River has had a history of having one of the state’s highest crime rates, progress is being made.

Mr. Vandal said that as the mayor gains experience in office, he can better understand the needs of local police.

Spending and taxes were also a focus of the debate. Mayor Coogan said the increase in spending over the last five years is attributed to mandated spending on education and a growing community.

Mr. Amaral said the increase in education funding has not impacted student performance.

Mr. Vandal said he hopes to use private funding from a company he wants to launch to make up for any budget shortfall.

Mr. Cesar said the city has done a poor job in prioritizing spending.

During the debate, the candidates also shared their ideas on lowering rents, homelessness, and their vision of utilizing the land following the reconstruction of Davol Street.
