Fall River Mayor Jasiel Correia II today revoked the job offer to Christopher Okafor to be the city’s director of the Department of Community Maintenance.  Here is the statement released by the Mayor’s office (via Fall River Government Television):

“Mayor Jasiel F. Correia II has issued a statement regarding Director of Community Maintenance position in Fall River:

Today, I have made the decision not to hire Christopher Okafor as Fall River’s new Director of Community Maintenance. There were several factors in this decision, which I will outline here.

My usual process in making major decisions is to gather all the information I can and to solicit advice from trusted sources, both within and outside of my administrative team, including City Councilors. That’s the process I used in this instance.

First, I will address questions about the proposed salary for Mr. Okafor. As you know, the advertised range for this position was $80,000 to $110,000. I was comfortable with any number within that range, and that has not changed.

What is at issue is Mr. Okafor’s repeated claim that he is making approximately $110,000 at his present job in Maynard, Massachusetts. The Town of Maynard has confirmed to us that Mr. Okafor’s total remuneration is the $92,540.21. Despite our repeated requests for proof that Mr. Okafor’s current remuneration is the amount that he has claimed, he has not provided it.

This presents a credibility issue, which has led me to believe that Mr. Okafor is not an appropriate choice for this or any position within my administration.”
