With SouthCoast Rail expected to begin service this spring, the city has received notice that it complies with a state regulation mandating housing initiatives near rail stations.

Communities that fall under the MBTA Communities Law had until December 31 to file their plans with the agency. Communities that do not comply with the mandate may be penalized via a cut in state funding.

The beleaguered former Fall River police station on Bedford Street is back in the news.

Wethersfield LLC of Chelsea purchased the building for $10,000 four years ago with the plan to convert the building into apartments. Lack of action on the building has made it an environmental and public safety hazard.

Mayor Coogan says the city is in the process of reclaiming the building for demolition.
