Mayor Highlights Accomplishments in State of the City Address

Last night, Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan delivered his sixth State of the City Address before a joint meeting of the city council and school committee. The 30-minute speech focused on promoting his administration’s accomplishments since taking office in 2020.

The mayor started by sharing how the city has made strides in stabilizing its fiscal health.

The mayor pointed to the expansion of staff and services within the fire and emergency medical services department and paid special attention to the police department’s work recruiting officers and fighting crime.

On education the mayor says Fall River is one of the few communities to see an increase in enrollment, resulting in the need to improve and grow services.

The mayor predicted that with the launch of South Coast Rail this month, the development along Rte. 79 and Davol Street once reconstruction is complete, and the revitalization of the Flint, Fall River will be prime for economic development growth. In the meantime, Fall River remains competitive in working with companies to expand and create new jobs.

Mayor Coogan said the city continues to work on reducing the number of homeless, connecting those with substance abuse or mental health disorders with support. He also said Fall River is doing more to create more affordable housing.

The mayor also renewed his commitment to supporting and funding improvements to streets, sidewalks, parks, and water and sewer systems.
