At his first news conference as mayor on Monday, January 11th, Mayor Jasiel Correia II announced the appointment of former Starr administrator Michael Aguiar as the city’s substance abuse coordinator. The purpose is for Aguiar to work with other social service non profit organizations, as well as the police department, to make sure opiate addicts in the city are getting the help they need. But, according to Correia, that’s not all:
The mayor created the postion through grant monies and by eliminating a nursing position within city hall, that he says is an unnecessary position since residents can get vaccines and other minor care through pharmacies and various clinics.
