The daily management and operations of the Fall River and New Bedford State Piers will be taken over by MassDevelopment. That was a recent announcement from Governor Charlie Baker more than a year following strategic planning and stakeholder outreach on the future of both piers and others owned by the Department of Conservation and Recreation.
Transfer of the daily operations will follow the signing of an inter-agency memorandum of understanding, which the Baker administration identified would be finalized in the coming weeks.
The Fall River State Pier is currently being operated by the Fall River Line Pier, Inc., and overseen by DCR. Just last week the Fall River Line Pier sent a group to the five-day PORTCON 2017 conference. Mayor Jasiel Correia II also attended at the board’s invitation.
Correia said he knew the state was looking at the pier, but didn’t know until recently of the change in state oversight. He was also assured by MassDevelopment that the change should not affect the Fall River Line Pier and the board’s work at the state pier.
