Bristol Community College’s annual breakfast to honor the life and ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will feature filmmaker/historian Claire Andrade-Watkins. The 2017 African American Alumnus of the Year will be awarded as well as the presentation of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Poster and Essay contest winners chosen from contest participants at area schools.

Cape Verdean American filmmaker/historian Claire Andrade-Watkins is a Professor of Africana and Postcolonial Media Studies at the Institute for Liberal Arts & Interdisciplinary Studies at Emerson College as well as a 2016 Visiting Scholar, Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice, and a Fellow, Swearer Center for Public Service at Brown University. Mrs. Andrade Watkins was a 1995-1996 Fulbright Scholar in Cape Verde and a recipient of an American Philosophical Society grant in l997.

Christopher Oyenuga ’12, Fairfax, Virginia, will be named the 2017 Distinguished African American Alumnus of the Year.

The breakfast will be held on Monday, January 16, 2017, in the Commonwealth College Center (G-Building) Cafeteria, BCC Fall River Campus, 777 Elsbree St. The event begins at 8:30 a.m. with music by Gary Lyon & Living Water, awards, and celebration, followed by an ecumenical service at the Bethel A.M.E. Church in Fall River. The event is free and open to the community.
