A ‘Not Guilty’ plea has been entered in Fall River Second District Court this week on behalf of 26 year old Scott Rego who has been charged in connection with the stabbing death of his girlfriend during a heated argument May 22nd. The couple, who lived together at 17 Linden Street, were involved in what the defendant claimed was a double stabbing incident.

Rego is charged with killing 36 year old Kristina Reis after stabbing her in the neck. The defendant had called 911 shortly before 9:18 p.m. following the incident and told the dispatcher that the two had stabbed each other. Police found Reis on the couple’s third floor porch bleeding profusely from a neck wound. She was taken to Charlton Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Meanwhile, Rego, who had been stabbed in the back, was eventually transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released.

At his arraignment at Fall River Second District Court on Tuesday, family members for both families were present. No bail arguments were discussed, or a bail amount entered, since attorneys agreed beforehand that the defendant would be detained without bail, and without prejudice, meaning that bail can be argued at a later date. The not guilty plea was automatically entered and Rego remains in custody until his next court appearance scheduled for June 29th.

In the meantime, prosecutors expect to present the case to a Bristol County Grand Jury for indictment. If indicted, Rego’s case would be transferred to superior court. If found guilty on the charge of First Degree Murder, Rego will automatically serve a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
