On International Women’s Day last Friday elected officials and members of local social service agencies gathered at Government Center to condemn gender-based domestic and sexual violence and take the White Ribbon Campaign pledge.
The White Ribbon Campaign began in Canada over 30 years ago following the massacre in 1989 of 14 women at Polytechnique Montréal by a killer who was identified as an anti-feminist.
Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan, Bristol County District Attorney Tom Quinn and State Representative Carole Fiola joined representatives from SSTAR, Greater Fall River Domestic Violence Coalition, WIC & Healthfirst Inc. in committing to never remaining silent in confronting sexual harassment, sexual assault or domestic violence against others.
District Attorney Quinn said he has had the difficult task of prosecuting dozens of domestic violence cases during his career.
