Letter carriers in Fall River, Somerset, and Westport will join thousands of others across the country on Saturday in collecting non-perishable food items as part of their yearly Stamp Out Hunger campaign to stock local food pantries.

Residents should have received a plastic bag in their mailboxes to fill with food donations. Fall River organizer Paul Knarr says local letter carriers look forward to this event, and residents remain extremely generous in their support.

For ten years, the United Way of Greater Fall River has partnered with local letter carriers in providing the bags with the support of BankFive, Blount Fine Foods, and Saint Anne’s Hospital Brown Health. United Way Executive Director Kim Smith says the organization’s participation in the food drive supports its mission to combat food insecurity.

Sixteen food pantries will be the beneficiaries of the food donations, including the Veterans Association of Bristol County in Fall River, which serves 800 veterans in need every month.

Mr. Knarr says the food pantries play an ever-increasing role within a community as individual circumstances change.
