U.S. District Court Judge Douglas Woodlock today acquitted former Fall River Mayor Jasiel Correia of six wire fraud charges and two tax fraud charges in relation to the operation of his SnoOwl app business with which he was convicted during his federal trial this spring.
The judge is also considering acquitting Correia on two other tax fraud convictions but will give prosecutors until tomorrow morning to substantiate its case that the convictions have merit.
Judge Woodlock will not throw out the extortion and conspiracy convictions related to Correia’s dealing with, while mayor, prospective recreational marijuana dealers in Fall River.
Woodlock also denied a defense motion for a new trial citing Correia did not have “ineffective counsel” when he was represented by attorney Kevin Reddington during the trial.
Sentencing on the remaining convictions will be held tomorrow beginning at 11:00 a.m.
Correia was convicted on May 14 on 21 charges of wire and tax fraud in conjunction with the operation of his SnoOwl app business and extortion and conspiracy in his interaction with the potential marijuana vendors.
