It’s Flag Day!

The Fourth of July is traditionally celebrated as America’s birthday, but the idea of a yearly day specifically celebrating the American Flag is believed to have first originated in 1885. That’s because sources say June 14th – which is now known as National Flag Day – is the anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes.

Here in Fall River, City Councilor Ray Mitchell raised the flag at the square between Government Center and the main Post Office in honor of Flag Day. Children from area schools participated in the event, which Councilor Mitchell has traditionally been a part of for years.
