Lizzie Borden, the infamous Fall River woman charged with murdering her parents with an axe 124 years ago today, is being highlighted, at least in local news. In remembrance of the infamous murder and subsequent trial that resulted in the acquittal of Borden after a jury of her peers found her ‘not guilty’, one hour tours will held at the Fall River Historical Society on Rock Street that highlights memorabilia and documents in connection with Lizzie’s ordeal.
According to Assistant Curator Dennis Binette, one interesting exhibit will showcase the axe head (see slider) believed to have been used in the murder. Binette tells FRC Media News that a Borden family member uncovered the axe and other documents from the family-owned home called Maplecroft Mansion on Fifth Street during a clean-up of the residence in the 1960’s.
“Interestingly, the unsuspecting woman found the axe head and documents in a metal container covered with a tarp in the attic of Lizzie’s former home. These items were then donated to the Historical Society,” Binette says, “including an original photograph of the jurors that Lizzie requested be taken of them after her acquittal.”
The tours will be held at various times throughout the day. Area residents and tourists interested in participatingn can contact the Historical Society at (508) 679-1071.
