Bristol County Sheriff Paul Heroux this week gave the media an update and tour of the Bristol County House of Correction on projects that have been undertaken to reduce the instances of suicide at the Dartmouth jail, which have risen to three times the national average.
The works as a result of a consultant’s report that identified 23 issues with the prison’s policies and procedures that needed to be addressed.
Just over a year in office, the Sheriff says just about all of the recommendations from the report have been or are in the process of being undertaken.
Another project still in the planning stages is the installation of toilets and locks in all the cells at the facility.
The sheriff plans to move ahead on the closure of the Ash Street Jail in New Bedford and convert the former ICE detention facility into a training facility.
