Highlights of Governor Healey’s State of the Commonwealth Address

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey used her second State of the Commonwealth Address to out her administration’s accomplishments over the past two years while recognizing the challenges ahead.

The governor recommitted her goal to make the state more affordable for all residents.

On affordable housing, the governor touted recent legislation that will allow the state to construct more homes, lowering costs.

The governor also wants to reduce costs for renters by eliminating the fee many pay when searching for an apartment posted to a broker by the landlord.

When it comes to the state’s emergency shelter system, Governor Healey again is calling on the federal government to do its share on border enforcement and contribute to shelter costs.

On education, the governor says the state needs to adopt a fair assessment for high school graduates.

The governor also promoted the impending launch of SouthCoast Rail this spring and her efforts to strengthen local healthcare through the sale last year of Steward Health, the former owner of Saint Anne’s Hospital.

She also pledged to work with the incoming Trump administration promising to “not change who we are”.
