Despite dismal weather and the lack of local candidates running for office – save for the 6th Bristol District State Representative seat between incumbent Carole Fiola and her opponent David Steinhof – Fall River voters are out in full force today. That from the City’s Board of Election Chairperson Kelly Souza-Young, who tells FRC Media News she’s excited about the amount of residents heading to the polls so far.
“Before today’s final election, I had predicted a 25% voter turnout,” Souza-Young said, “but now I’m re-thinking that number will increase. More people than expected are going to the polls.”
When asked what she thinks is bringing out voters, Souza-Young admitted she has no solid answer. “It could be the three ballot questions,” she theorizes, adding that early voting which ended November 2nd, attracted 1,344 residents, 200 of which turned out on a cold, and rainy Saturday.
“I’ve been getting more phone calls today from residents asking about their voting status and what precinct they should report to than on any election day in recent memory,” Souza-Young said.
To date, there are 50,167 registered voters, 29 precincts, and two sub precincts in the city. Polls opened at 7:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 tonight.
