The war between the Fall River Office of Economic Development and the Correia Administration continues to heat up. According to published reports today, the mayor’s office is expected to begin eviction proceedings against FROED, which is housed in offices on the sixth floor of One Government Center.
The city’s Corporation Counsel Joe Macy is quoted as saying, “The city intends to take action to cause FROED to vacate the premises.”
The eviction proceedings were sparked as a result of back rent that has been owed for quite some time and may begin as early as Monday.
Mayor Correia is in the process of convincing the Redevelopment Authority to terminate or alter a three-year management contract with FROED in order to establish a city-run economic development office. The RDA, which has had a contract with FROED since the year 2000 is expected to meet tonight, May 5th to vote on whether or not to terminate it’s recently renewed contract with the non-profit agency.
The announcement to begin proceedings to remove FROED staff from Government Center came hours after news circulated that the city’s building inspector Joseph Biszko wrote a cease and desist order to close the top levels of the Third Street Parking Garage because of structural defects. The RDA owns the garage, which is managed by a company called Partnership for Better Parking.
