The Fall River Office of Economic Development is looking for outside legal counsel following a proposal by Mayor Jasiel Correia to realign the non profit agency.
In a surprise announcement a few weeks back, Correia introduced his proposed Office of Economic Development and Tourism Department to be overseen by the city. He is trying to convince the Redevelopment Authority – which has contracted services with the non-profit agency FROED for $132 thousand dollars a year since 2000 – to break the administrative services contract with FROED. Correia has apparently changed his new department’s title to the Fall River Planning and Development Authority.
Correia is also proposing to redirect $300 thousand dollars in FROED Federal Community Block Grant Funding to fund his new department, although he did come under criticism when it was pointed out by the media that federal grants cannot be used to fund tourism.
FROED President Frank Marchione said that he, the mayor, FROED Vice President Kenneth Fiola, and City Administrator Cathy Ann Viveiros met late last week to discuss Correia’s plan.
FRC Media News will have more details as they become available.
