After 39 years being housed on the sixth floor of Government Center the Fall River Office of Economic Development has moved to a new location at the Cherry and Webb building on South Main Street.
Mayor Jasiel Correia II began eviction proceedings against FROED in May, claiming they failed to pay rent. The mayor’s action also followed a series of battles between FROED and the administration. Accusations by the FROED board claimed that Correia is under FBI and Housing and Urban Development investigations, while Correia failed to give FROED its usual Community Development Block Grant appropriation which this year was $320 thousand dollars.
Fiola says his staff is settling into its new home, and hopes to increase their business loan activity, help local businesses to expand, and continue to work with the Redevelopment Authority on the waterfront plans, among other activities.
Fiola has been quoted as saying “…we prepare for the worst and hope for the best,” adding that he wants “…to continue the balance of repositioning Fall River both in terms of economic diversity and opportunities.”
