The Fall River Office of Economic Development can not get a commitment from the city that it will receive a portion of a federal block grant money it has received since 1978.
The Correia administration will not commit to the $320 thousand dollars that had been budgeted this spring to be allocated to the organization from the city’s expected $2.6 million dollar block grant monies, according to Executive Vice President of FROED Ken Fiola. If the money is not received, FROED will have to lay off three of its six person staff.
FROED Board Chair Frank Marchione asked members to pass two budgets for the organization, one to be used if the block grant money is allocated, one if it is not. Machione says he is displeased that two budgets had to be presented at this morning’s meeting. The possible loss of the allocation is a new development, according to Fiola who has been feuding with Correia, who is taking steps to oust FROED from its offices at Government Center and still wants the city to establish it’s own economic development office. No word on when FROED will or can expect its decades long given funding.
