There is such a thing as a “free lunch,” at least if you participate in the free lunch program being held this summer at specific Fall River parks.
The program runs between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Monday – Friday, and is funded by federal Community Development Block Grant monies.
The free lunch program is sponsored in part by the Mayor’s office, and the city’s Re-Creation Department. Ann Marie Holly is the Youth Leadership Specialist for Re-creation. She says menus vary, but include chicken nuggets, hot dogs, pizza, vegetables, and milk.
“We get as many as 70 kids to participate in the lunch program on any given day,” she says adding, “The turnout usually depends on the weather.”
Because of low turnout in the past, the program does not run at North Park or Highland Park, but is still offered at three apartment complexes: Father Diaferio, Bennie Costa, and Pleasant View.
In addition to lunch, the program also includes activities from Arts and Crafts to sports such as basketball as was the case today at Layfayette Park on Eastern Avenue. (See photo image above).
The free lunch program ends on August 28th. For more information, visit the Fall River Re-recreation’s Department website: http://www.gfrrec.org/
