We spoke with former city councilor Laura Sampson, following her resignation at the end of this week’s city council meeting.
Ms. Sampson resigned after a media report on Tuesday called into question her qualifications to participate in the debate over a new police chief, citing her brother John Ferreira’s role as president of the police department’s patrolmen’s association as a conflict of interest. The publication also asserted that members of the FFRD were receiving services at Ms. Sampson’s behavioral health center, We Care Health and Wellness. Ms. Sampson called the allegations a danger to her clients and staff.
She says that during her three years in office, she developed thicker skin, but feels the media report is another example of how free speech can lead to the spread of disinformation that can harm individuals.
Prior to this week, Ms. Sampson had already decided she would seek reelection when her term expired at year’s end. During her three years on the council, she admired the respect shown by her colleagues despite differences of opinion on issues. She is also proud to have led the effort to spend $2 million to expand opportunities to youth across Fall River.
Ms.Sampson says she loves Fall River and plans to remain involved in projects across Fall River.
Following Ms. Sampson’s resignation, Ricky Tith was sworn in to fill the vacant city council seat.
