Three of the five candidates running for mayor in the city’s preliminary election took part in a mayoral forum held by the Flint Neighborhood Association on Wednesday night. It’s the first such forum before the September 16 election.

Challengers Gabriel Boomer Amaral, Carlos Cesar, and Christopher Silvia were on hand before an audience at the Sociedade Cultural Açoreana. Incumbent Mayor Paul Coogan referenced a prior commitment for his absence, while challenger Michael Vandal did not respond to the invitation. The forum was streamed live by FRCMedia.

The candidates answered questions ranging from supporting neighborhood needs to public safety staffing and prioritizing essential city services such as street repairs and trash pick-up. The trio gave varying responses to how they would deal with the city’s homeless problem.

The candidates were also asked how, as mayor, they could make it easier to attract small businesses.
