Former Fall River Mayor Jasiel Correia was back before a federal judge yesterday as attorneys prepare for his trial on alleged bribery and extortion charges. US District Court Judge Douglas Woodlock has set a trial date in the case for January 13 for both Correia and former Chief of Staff Genoveva Andrade.
The mayor faces 24 counts alleging defrauding investors and tax fraud associated with his now-defunct smartphone app company SnoOwl and having extorted hundreds of thousands of dollars from marijuana vendors looking for permission to operate in the city.
Andrade is facing six counts of alleged extortion of one marijuana vendor and bribery. The government contends she paid Correia half her salary as chief of staff to keep her job. A request by Andrade’s Charles Rankin attorney to try his client separately from Correia was denied by Judge Woodlock.
