Fall River’s Veterans’ Services Officer has been on the job for just about a year and says his office remains committed to meeting the needs of city vets.

Talos Farris says the office receives calls daily from veterans who may qualify for federal and state benefits to help make ends meet. He says the biggest need for veterans remains finding affordable housing.

Mr. Farris says Massachusetts is a leader in providing resources for veterans, particularly with the passage of the Heroes Act, which, among other things, allows communities to increase real estate tax breaks for veterans who own property.

This year is Mr. Farris’s first year organizing Memorial Day events. He says he appreciates the city’s many veterans organizations and their commitment to recognizing their members’ service and sacrifice.

Even though America is not in an active military conflict, the importance of Memorial Day should not be forgotten.

Fall River has a full slate of Memorial Day events this weekend. Here’s a look.
