It’s June 14th – Flag Day. In honor of what has become a national observance, State Representative Alan Silvia will be at the USS Massachusetts at Battleship Cove this morning to honor the day. Silvia, who also serves as Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on Veterans, will participate in a Star Spangled Banner event and the raising and retiring of each flag aboard the ship.
Silvia also gives details about Flag Day on his fb page which includes the following information:
- In 1885 – that’s 239 years ago – the United States adopted the stars & strips which symbolize freedom, liberty, hope and opportunities for all
- President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed a presidential proclamation that established Flag Day to be observed June 14 on an annual basis
- And…all Americans are asked to display our country’s flag in homes and businesses
For proper flag etiquette please see our story with the City’s Veteran’s Agent Ray Hague.
