Fall River Schools to Open Under a Hybrid Model

The Fall River Public Schools will open in September under a plan that combines in-person and remote learning.  See the plan below.

The Fall River School Committee tonight voted unanimously to approve the hybrid instructional plan proposed by Superintendent Matthew Malone.

Under the plan, teachers and staff will return to the classroom on Tuesday, September 1st to begin planning and setting up classrooms for instruction.  Students’ first day of school will be Wednesday, September 16 with all instruction handled remotely.  Students will begin to return in-person on Thursday, September 17.

Under the hybrid plan, students will be split among four cohorts:

  • Cohort A: These students encompass special education students and English learners.  These students will be learning in-person four days every week.
  • Cohort B:  These students will be part of a learning environment that encompasses 100% remote learning.  Parents will make the determination as to whether their children will learn remotely.
  • Cohort C & D: These students will learn both in-person and remotely based on a two-week schedule.  One cohort will be in class for one week and remote the next.

All students will be experiencing remote learning every Wednesday to allow teachers planning time and for custodial staff to deep clean buildings.  Teachers will be instructing all students from within their school’s classrooms.

Superintendent Malone said the plan is flexible so that if infections rise, the department can quickly adjust to a complete remote learning environment.

During the citizen input portion of the meeting prior to the vote, Fall River Educator’s Association (FREA) President Rebecca Cusick told the committee that even though the re-opening process has been thorough and transparent, members recommended that the year begin remotely, moving to a hybrid model once COVID-19 infection rates stabilize.  Regardless, Cusick said the FREA membership will strive to work in support of students.

I think this is stupid.I work in Health care and work full time how do you expect working parents to do this. Like I said I work in Healthcare during this whole process and if you take the proper precautions the kids will be fine. How do you expect me to do home school from work. If these kids don’t succeed it in on YOU.
