Fall River Police Captain Jay Huard has been suspended for 30 days without pay following his role in sharing a post on the department’s official Facebook page involving the conviction of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in the murder of Geoge Floyd.
Police Chief Jeffrey Cardoza issued the suspension following the release of an independent investigation into Huard’s actions in April. Huard agreed with the suspension.
The investigation by Liberty Fornsics, LLC acknowledged Huard’s contention that the post he shared was meant for his personal Facebook page and not the one he managed for the FRPD.
Huard shared the post after Chauvin was taken into custody following this conviction. The post read: “Chauvin immediately stood and calmly placed his hands behind his back. Imagine where we’d be if George had done the same.” Cheif Cardoiza immediately received complaints that the post claiming it was insensitive to the plight Floyd faced during his death in May of 2020.
Huard quickly removed the post and reported the incident to Chief Cardoza.
The investigation noted that Huard has had an exemplary career with the FRPD that spanned nearly 25 years. He had worked as the department’s public information officer, a role he no longer holds. The investigation also cites Huard’s remorse over the incident.
