Fall River residents voted ‘for’ the recall of federally indicted Mayor Jasiel F. Correia in today’s recall election. That was the decision of the majority vote on the first half of the ballot, with the all in favor vote surpassing the all against by approximately 3,000 votes.
However, when it came time to decide on the second half of the ballot who should take Correia’s place, residents voted the mayor back into office with a 35% of the voters waning him to stay in office.. Unofficial tallies from the city’s Board of Elections Office showed that Correia won over top vote-getter, School Committman Paul Coogan by only 241 votes.
During his concession speech at Scottie’s Pub on Pleasant Street, Coogan said he will not challenge the voting numbers, saying that the residents made their decision, and he will abide by their wishes adding, “Fair is fair.” Instead, Coogan told his supporters he was ‘just beginning,’ and plans to seek election for the top post this fall when a regular election is scheduled to be held.
Meanwhile, Mayor Correia is pleased with the win, saying he will continue to run the city in the best interest of the citizens. In addition to Correia and Coogan there were three other candidates running for office: City Councilor Joe Camara, former city councilor and school committee member Kyle Riley, and newcomer Erica Scott-Pacheco.
