Fall River police arrested a city man who is accused of assaulting a woman who had refused to give him money after he approached her on East Main Street.
Police allege that 23 year old Joseph Carela-Carty of 163 Lamphor Street pushed the woman into a nearby entryway. A struggle ensued between the two and spilled into an open first-floor apartment. There, the suspect is alleged to have armed himself with a large kitchen knife and assaulted the victim until the occupant of the apartment intervened and forced Carela-Carty to flee the area.
According to Fall River Police Lt. Ronald Furtado, Carela-Carty was arrested after police received information that he was in an apartment on Wilbur Street. Officers apprehended him when he tried to get away. The officers also seized two knives.
Carela-Carty was charged with armed robbery; assualt and battery with a dangerous weapon; witness intimidation; home invasion; and kidnapping.
