The Fall River Firefighters Union has ratified a three year contract with the city earlier this week.
President of the International Association of firefighters Local 1314 said that for the first time the city has agreed to pay firefights for their turnout gear, or personal protective equipment, calling it a “Notable” term of the agreement.
The firefighters have been working on an expired contract, like other unions working in the city. Local 1314’s contract expired on June 30th, 2015.
The firefighter union basically agreed to two contracts, both retroactive. the first with a zero pay hike, covered from July 1st, 2015 to June 30th, 2016.
The firefighters union had already agreed to an initiative that new recruits would earn EMT basic certification within one year as condition of their employment after the city was awarded a $2.06 million SAFER grant that added 10 new firefighters under former Mayor Sam Sutter in July 2015. The grant expires at the end of June 2018.
City paramedics signed a three-year contract in late December that included the certified firefighters could work on rescue units.
