Good news for Fall River by Governor Charles Baker.
The governor recently awarded almost one million dollars in grant monies for the city’s public safety departments. This is the sixth consecutive year that the Fall River fire and police departments were given the funding. Currently, the funding totals about ninety five hundred thousand dollars for police, and approximately five hundred thousand dollars to the fire department.
This year’s allocation comes from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security which awarded a total of $3.15 million dollars to assist fourteen (14) communities with fire and police staff. Fall River’s most recent award is less than last year when police received about seven hundred thousand dollars, and the fire department nearly five hundred thousand dollars.
Senator Michael Rodrigues, who has lobbied funding of the police and fire staff grants, says the money was originally listed as one of the programs to be impacted on the governor’s 9C cuts announced two weeks ago to bridge the gap between an anticipated shortfall in state revenues and approved spending.
The state began awarding the public safety staffing grants in 2011. Since then the city’s police and fire departments have received over $4 million dedicated to staffing. Last year’s grant awards helped the city plug budget holes in overtime payments.
