The race for school committee in this fall’s scheduled election has picked up after a slow start. In the past several weeks the number of candidates has grown to twelve (12) residents taking out nomination papers.

Incumbent School Committee member Paul Coogan took out papers recently. He is joined by incumbent Joseph Martins.

Also new to the list is Amy M. Blanchette; David B. Cowen Jr.; Joshua E. Hetzler; Thomas Khoury; Jeffrey T. Sarnecky; and  Crystal O. Stone. Committeeman Joseph Martins has taken out nomination papers. He is joined by potential candidates Sean Connell, Mariam Morales, and Jessica Wong.

Incumbents who have chosen not to run: Gabriel Andrade; Ed Costar; and Melissa Panchley.

So far seventeen (17) people have taken out nomination papers to possibly run for City Council. Added to that list: Incumbent Cliff Ponte; David B. Cowan Jr; and Jeffrey Silvia.

Incumbent City Councilors Raymond Mitchell; and Stephen Long, had previously taken out nomination papers, as well as Emanuel Barros, Ronald A. Cabral; Russell Desbiens; Michelle Dionne; Mario J. DoRego III; Daniel D. Dupere; former City Councilor Bradford L. Kilby; Trottjoseph Lee; Jason Springer; Marc E. Thiboutot; Ian A. Tomkins; and Derek R. Viveiros.

There are 8 potential mayoral candiates, inlcluding incumbent Mayor Jasiel Correia II; Richard Branco; City Councilor Richard Cabeceiras; Luis Cabral; Patrick Higgins; City Council Vice President City Councilor Linda Pereira; and Emmanuel Pestana. Ronald Cabral took out dual nomination papers for both mayor and city council.

The preliminary election is Sept. 12 with Nov. 7th the date of the local general election.

Voters on election day will also be asked for an up or down vote on a proposed new Home Rule Charter.
