What’s Happening at the Library: September 13-September 18, 2021
Here’s what’s happening at the library this week! Our Winter Hours started as of September 11, and the library is now open on Saturdays, 9-5. Our winter schedule is: Monday through Thursday, 9 am – 9 pm, and Friday and Saturday, 9 am – 5 pm.
The library is now lending wifi hotspots! If you don’t have internet access at home or need service while traveling, you can borrow a wifi hotspot with unlimited data. For more information, visit the circulation desk or call 508-324-2700, ext. 2.
On Saturdays from 1-3 pm, the library will host a drop-in Chess Club. Adults and teens age 13 & up are invited to drop by the Fell Reading Room to play a game of chess, or choose from various board games that are also available. Beginners and experienced players are welcome. This club also meets at the Somerset Public Library on Tuesdays from 5-7 pm. Players are welcome to attend both or either!
During the month of September, the art exhibit, “Churches of Fall River,” featuring the photography of Ron Caplain, will remain on display in the lower-level lobby. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Fall River Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
On Monday, September 13, free big-screen movies return to the library! We will host a matinee show at 1 pm and an evening show at 6 pm in the Meeting Room. This week’s film is the Lin-Manuel Miranda musical In the Heights, starring Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins, and Leslie Grace.
Preschool Storytimes are held every Tuesday morning at 11 am. Children ages 3 and up, along with parents or caregivers, are invited to join us in the Meeting Room for stories and activities.
On Wednesday, September 15, the library hosts two book clubs. Books & Tea meets at 2 pm in the Meeting Room. Members are invited to share their own reviews of books they have enjoyed recently. Light refreshments will be served. Then, the Fall River Library Book Club will meet at 6 pm to discuss the World War II historical novel, The Rose Code by Kate Quinn.
Also on Wednesday, September 15, our Magic: the Gathering group will meet up in the Fell Reading Room from 5-7 pm. Players age 12 and up are invited to attend. Beginners welcome!
The library’s teen Dungeons & Dragons group meets online on Discord on Wednesdays at 6 pm and in the library on Thursdays at 6 pm. Both groups are currently full, but contact Taylor at tsilva@sailsinc.org to be put on the waiting list.
On Saturday, September 18, there’s a full slate of events for kids, teens, and all ages! First, at 11 am, kids can meet cartoon sensation Bluey on the Elm Street lawn. In case of rain, Bluey will greet fans in the Meeting Room. Bluey will visit from 11 am to 12 noon.
Then, at 1 pm, teens are invited to make a Book Hedgehog! Using upcycled library books, we’ll create a fun animal buddy who can live on your desk or bookshelf. They also make great gifts for book lovers! This program is free and open to ages 12-18.
Also at 1 pm, adults and teens 13+ are again invited to join us for chess club and board games.
In addition to these activities, everyone is invited to check out our new reading list, “September 11 Remembered,” on the library’s web site at https://tinyurl.com/FRPL911. It will guide you to books about the history, impact, and meaning of the September 11, 2001 attacks for adults, teens, and children.
