October is here, and we’re counting down the days to Halloween with a full scare schedule! Here’s what’s happening the week of Monday, October 17 – Saturday, October 22, 2022.

Take-home Crafts: Starting Monday morning, October 17, kids can pick up a Witch’s Cauldron Craft in the Children’s Room. Beginning Monday, October 24, we will have a Dangling Skeleton Craft. Take-home crafts are available all week in the Children’s Room while supplies last. Crafts are sponsored by Debby and Richard Danner.

Storytimes: Weekly Preschool Storytimes are held on Tuesdays at 11 am for children ages 3 and up. Registration is not required. Another storytime, Play & Learn, is offered Wednesdays at 10 am. This group is offered through the Fall River School Department. To register your child, please contact Miss Shannon, at sdunbar@fallriverschools.org.

Monday Movies: Matinee movies are offered every Monday at 1 pm in the Meeting Room with our new surround sound system. This month, we are showing the musical biopic Elvis on Monday, October 17, action-packed superhero movie Thor: Love & Thunder on Monday, October 24; and creepy thriller The Black Phone on Monday, October 31.

Here are some highlights for the rest of the week:

TUESDAY, 10/18: Our Knitting Group meets at 2 pm in the Fell Room. Adults who knit, crochet, or do other yarn crafts are welcome on the first and third Tuesdays of each month.

At 4 pm, kids are invited to a Creepy Critter Lab in the Meeting Room. Kids aged 5 and up can make their own spooky creations. All materials are provided.

In the evening, we have a Wire Wrapped Jewelry workshop led by Stephanie Enloe of Craftyish. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Fall River Public Library. Registration is required, along with a $5 materials fee to be paid at registration. For information, please contact the Circulation Department at 508-324-2700, ext. 2.

WEDNESDAY, 10/19: Join us for Books & Tea at 2 pm. No required reading; everyone chats about books they’ve enjoyed recently over tea and light refreshments.

Our Magic: the Gathering group returns this week! Join teens aged 12-18 from 5-7 pm in the Fell Reading Room. New players are always welcome.

Ready for some spooky fun? Families are invited to our Creepy Carnival Show at 6 pm in the Meeting Room. Enjoy scary stories and haunted happenings. Meet some monstrous visitors, including Medusa, the Abominable Snowman, a disembodied head, and more! Please register for this event by calling the Children’s Room, 508-324-2700, ext. 4. Recommended for ages 6+.

THURSDAY, 10/20: Kids age 4 and up can play interactive games with BEAM from 4-5 pm in the Meeting Room. Registration not required.

At 6 pm, our Fantasy & Sci-Fi Book Club will meet in the Meeting Room. This month’s book is Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. Both returning and new members are welcome to join us!

Our head of Children’s Services, David Mello, will present a dramatic reading of The Tell-Tale Heart and Other Ghostly Tales at the Lafayette-Durfee House, 94 Cherry Street. Enjoy these spooky tales in style in the beautifully restored Lafayette-Durfee House, a historic home originally owned by Judge Thomas Durfee, which hosted the Marquis de Lafayette during the Revolutionary War. Recommended for adults and teens.

SATURDAY, 10/15: Kids are invited to create a Haunted House and Graveyard Craft at 11 am in the Meeting Room. This spooky scene, complete with bats, ghosts, and jack-o-lanterns, makes the perfect Halloween decoration.

In the afternoon, our Chess Club meets in the library’s Fell Reading Room at 1 pm.

There will also be a free Vaccine Clinic in the Meeting Room from 1 pm to 4 pm. Covid vaccines will be offered for adults and children ages 6 months and up. Insurance is not required, and walk-ins are welcome.

Next week, we’ll have even more spooky Halloween events for kids, teens, and adults, including a live Nightmare on Elm Street event on Thursday, October 27 at 7 pm. For more info, and to view a full library event calendar, visit fallriverlibrary.org.
