Fall River’s unemployment figures are looking brighter with the number down to 4.1 percent in November, the lowest rate in 16 years. That from Executive Director of the Fall River Office of Economic Development Ken Fiola. He says it was October of 2000 when the rate was down even further to 3.1 percent here in the city. Ten years later in 2010, the average unemployment rate stood at 14.2 percent. The latest figures reflect the approximately 1,800 people hired at the Amazon Fullfillment Center in the city’s industrial park, which opened it’s doors and was in full operation back in October.
The latest figures are being reported by the Office of Labor and Workforce Development the state agency that shows unemployment rates in the Commonwealth’s 351 municipalities, and 14 counties in Massachusetts, reporting out every month. The state unemployment rate was 2.9 percent in November.
The rate in Fall River is the 13th highest in Massachusetts while employment figures in Providence were the absolute highest in the state. Of the 15 communities with the highest unemployment, 12 are either on Cape Cod at the southeastern end, or in the northwest corner of the state.
