Just over 19 percent of city voters cast ballots in Tuesday’s Municipal Election. There was a tight contest in the mayor’s race. And the counting may not yet be over.
Incumbent Mayor Paul Coogan, looking for a fourth term in office, came out on top…But by a slight margin of only 225 votes over challenger Gabriel Boomer Amaral, 5,841 votes for the mayor, and 5,616 votes for Mr. Amaral. The mayor understood the impact of the close election while speaking to his supporters at Our Lady of Band Hall on Quarry Street.
First thing Wednesday morning, Mr. Amaral sought paperwork to launch a recount of the votes.
Mr. Amaral feels his message resonated with many voters.
