You can view our complete interview with the supporters of Question 1 on our special Election 2022 Ballot Questions page.
Question 1 on the state election ballot seeks a change to the state’s constitution to raise the income tax rate by 4% on those who earn more than one million dollars. The legislature passed the measure to be placed on the ballot, with the money collected to go toward funding public education, public colleges and universities; and the repair and maintenance of roads, bridges, and public transportation.
Dax Crocker, a Fall River school teacher and a representative from the Coalition for Social Justice which supports the passage of the measure, says amending the state’s constitution is a serious matter, as it makes sure those at the upper-income levels in the state pay their fair share of taxes.
Opponents of the measure say those in the middle class who run small businesses or own a home may be unfairly impacted by the new tax on the profit of selling their business or homes. Mr. Corocker says that may not necessarily be the case.
Mr. Crocker believes one of the biggest impacts of the new tax is helping state residents afford a college education.
Opponents claim the tax hike is not needed after the state has seen a sharp increase in revenue collected over the past two years. Mr. Crocker counters by saying revenue gains today do not mean they will continue into the future.
