FRCMedia is publishing stories of candidates and referendum questions in the November 8 State Election.  Today’s entry features the opponents to Question 1, raising the tax on income of over one million dollars.

You can view our complete interview with the opponents of Question 1 on our special Election 2022 Ballot Questions page.

Question 1 on the state election ballot seeks a change to the state’s constitution to raise the income tax rate by 4% on those who earn more than one million dollars. The legislature passed the measure to be placed on the ballot, with the money collected to go toward funding public education, public colleges and universities; and the repair and maintenance of roads, bridges, and public transportation.

Dan Cence represents the Coalition to Stop the Tax Hike Amendment and is urging voters to vote no on Question 1.  He says the tax hike will not just target those who are in the upper tier of income earners.

Mr. Cence says that even if the measure passes, it is not guaranteed that the excess money will necessarily be allocated to education and infrastructure.

The opponents to Question 1 also believe the tax increase will greatly impact small businesses across the state, many of who do not identify themselves as being wealthy.

Mr. Cense says because, if passed, the tax hike will become part of the state’s constitution, it will be difficult to have it overturned.
