Now that Duro Textiles has closed its doors in Fall River, and terminated employees because of $225,000 dollars in back taxes and fees that are owed, the Correia administration is taking steps to ensure the virtually abandoned properties are secure.
City Administrator Cathy Ann Viveiros has been quoted as saying the administration is doing all it can to make the properties safe for residents, and to recoup the money owed. This to avoid safety concerns like those surrounding the former King Phillip Mills Property located on Kilburn Street that was fire ravaged and left abandoned in 2013. State and city officials are currently looking to raze that structure and build a multi-use facility.
Two of the Duro properties are located at 110 Chace Street; one at 206 Globe Mills Avenue & the other at 1 Middle Street.
The abandoned properties are located in densely populated areas near Kennedy Park off Bay Street. The main concern of Mayor Correia is maintaining the safety systems within the four structures that belong to Duro. Property owners have contacted National Grid to say they are considering turning off power to the buildings. It is unknown how no electrical power would affect the structures should there be a fire or other emergency situation at the sites. Corporation Counsel Joseph Macy is working with the utility companies and the owners to try to come to a resolution concerning electrical power.
