Two draft reports given to the Correia Administration could result in the demolition of the abandoned King Phillip Mills Complex located at 372 Kilburn Street. One report is from LLB Architects out of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and the other from the BETA Group.
The $750 thousand square foot mill complex has been vacant since a fire ravaged the old cotton mill in January of 2012, and is considered a major safety issue for residents in the Kilburn Area.
While Mayor Jasiel Correia says the draft reports shows “Aggressive progress,” in his administration’s desire to see something done with the complex, State Representative Alan Silvia, who also heads the Southend Neighborhood Association, would like to see the building razed.
“The safety issues in that area are too great to keep the building in tact,” Silvia says.
The draft reports indicate the cost of renovation and demolition. The reports will be reviewed and commented on by the EPA, and then a final one will be done by the BETA company, according to the City Engineer Bryan Holmes.
The city applied for a demolition permit in February, and gave the required six month notice to the Fall River Historical Commission, a requirement by local ordinance since the property is listed on the Fall River Register of Significant Structures.
If the final decision is not to demolish the buildings, then the Correia Administration will consider mixed use of the property.
