If Fall River Mayor Jasiel Correia has his way, a new parking meter fee ordinance will be passed by the City Council’s Subcommittee on Ordinances & Legislation and then the full body. At its regularly scheduled meeting next week, the ordinance subcommittee will review the following request from the mayor:
‘As we continue our efforts to upgrade our municipal equipment, parking meters are warranting our attention. We need to remove the remaining crank units and replace them with digital meters. The purchase of new sensor technology will maximize meter efficiency in high volume locations. Upgrades will also include painting all meters and refurbishing the meter housing.
We have reviewed the rates charged by other communities and determined that we could increase our rates to be in line with cities including New Bedford, Newport and Taunton. The attached Ordinance will increase our rate from fifty cents/hour to one dollar/hour. Increased receipts will assist the Traffic Department in completing these necessary upgrades.
Your review and approval of this fee increase is respectfully requested.’
The subcommittee will meet at the city council chambers at One Government Center to discuss this request and other matters on Tuesday, July 10th, 2018 beginning at 5:30 pm. The public is welcome to attend.
