Democrat Chris Dempsey has limited government experience, but he feels he can still make an impact as the state’s next auditor.
Mr. Dempsey has served as a town meeting member in Brookline and was assistant secretary of transportation under Governor Deval Patrick. He is also known as one of the local leaders to thwart the effort to bring the 2024 Summer Olympics to Boston.
One of the initiatives he would undertake when first taking office is making sure money the Commonwealth has received from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) is being well spent.
The auditor’s office can also make recommendations to state departments on how they can run more efficiently and be an agent of positive change. Mr. Dempsey says he plans to focus on climate change action and suggest changes within the state police.
Mr. Dempsey has received the endorsement of outgoing auditor Suzanne Bump as well as Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan. He says his local and state government experience will come in handy in ensuring Fall River and other Gateway Cities get their fair share of state funding.
Mr. Dempsey is being challenged in the primary by state senator Diana DiZoglio. He feels his message is resonating with a wide range of state Democrats, including those serving alongside Senator DiZoglio on Beacon Hill.
