The Fall River City Council may be moving closer to banning single-use thin plastic grocery bags. The committee on Ordinance and Legislation last week gave its approval to send the matter to the full council.
During the meeting, the city’s corporation counsel Alan Rumsey said the proposed ban should meet any legal challenges as many communities across the Commonwealth have already put a ban in place. He did share what may potential objections.
Committee chair Shawn Cadime said keeping the city clean is a key factor in eliminating the bags with some local stores having already proactively removed them from use.
If passed, local store owners will have 180 days to use their remaining inventory before the ban goes into effect.
