U.S. District Court Judge Douglas Woodlock yesterday completed his sentencing of former Fall River Mayor Jasiel Correia, acquitting him on two counts but ordering him to pay back victims of his SnoOwl app business and allow the federal government to collect $566,740 in personal assets.
During last week’s sentencing of Correia on fraud and corruption convictions, Judge Woodlock hinted he would acquit the former mayor on the two remaining tax fraud charges in dispute by the defense. Last week the judge acquitted Correia on six wire fraud and two other tax fraud convictions, saying the prosecution did not fully prove its case.
Judge Woodlock sentenced Correia to serve six years in prison with three years of supervised release for the remaining wire fraud convictions and extortion and conspiracy convictions related to Correia’s role in seeking payment from prospective recreational marijuana in exchange for providing a favorable recommendation to state regulators. Correia was also ordered to pay a $1,100 fine.
In terms of the order to pay back investors of SnoOwl, Judge Woodlock ordered Correia to pay $310,240 to the following:
- David Cabeceiras: $145,000.00
- Mark Eisenberg: $25,000.00
- Victor Martinez: $25,000.00
- Stephen Miller: $70,000.00
- Carl Garcia: $45,240.00
The judge ordered the federal government to seize $566,740 of Correia’s assets as part of his forfeiture order.
Judge Woodlock also denied the defense motion for a new trial and ordered Correia to surrender to begin serving his prison term by 2pm on December 3.
