Governor Baker Nominates Roger J. Oliveira as Clerk Magistrate of the Bristol County Juvenile Court
BOSTON – Today, Governor Charlie Baker nominated Roger J. Oliveira to the position of Clerk Magistrate of the Bristol County Juvenile Court. Attorney Oliveira has spent over two decades serving children and families in Southeastern Massachusetts and has been serving as the Acting Clerk Magistrate in Bristol since 2014.
“Roger Oliveira is a skilled and dedicated civil servant who has been a proponent for important juvenile diversion programs in Bristol County,” said Governor Charlie Baker. “If confirmed by the Governor’s Council, I am confident that he will continue to serve the people, especially the youth, of Southeastern Massachusetts well.”
“Roger Oliveira has a long and respected tenure in the Massachusetts courts, starting his career as a Court Officer and rising through the ranks, ” said Lt. Governor Karyn Polito. “We are pleased to submit his name for the Governor’s Council’s advice and consent.”
The Juvenile Court Department is a statewide court with jurisdiction over civil and criminal matters including delinquencies, care and protections, youthful offender cases and children requiring assistance. The Juvenile Court’s mission is to protect children from abuse and neglect, to strengthen families, to rehabilitate juveniles and to protect the public from delinquent and criminal behavior. The Juvenile Court has over 40 judges, including Chief Justice Amy L. Nechtem, in over 40 locations.
Judicial nominations are subject to the advice and consent of the Governor’s Council. Applicants for judicial openings are reviewed by the Judicial Nominating Commission (JNC) and recommended to the governor. Governor Baker established the JNC in February, 2015 pursuant to Executive Order 558, a non-partisan, non-political Commission composed of volunteers from a cross-section of the Commonwealth’s diverse population to screen judicial applications. Twenty-one members were later appointed to the JNC in April, 2015.
About Roger Oliveira
Magistrate Oliveira has spent over twenty years representing children, families and individuals in Southeastern Massachusetts. Most recently, he has served as Acting Clerk Magistrate of the Bristol County Juvenile Court. Prior to his work at the Bristol County Juvenile Court, he worked as both an Assistant Clerk Magistrate and a Court Officer in the Massachusetts Trial Court. Early in his career, Oliveira co-founded Project COACH ALP-Secure, which is an alternative juvenile lock-up facility that serves over 90 communities in Southeastern Massachusetts. He also spent several years serving students and families in local Southeastern Massachusetts residential and educational programs as a Counselor and Teacher at Comcare Services Inc. (Network High School) in Brockton, Northeastern Family institute in Taunton, and Director of Security at Riverview School in Sandwich. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Administration of Justice and Politics from Salve Regina University, Oliveira graduated from Southern New England School of Law, which is now the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth School of Law. He is currently involved in the Committee on Race and Implicit Bias for the Trial Courts, the Youth Violence Prevention Steering Committee for the New Bedford and Fall River Police Departments, the Steering Committee for the Bristol County Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children Initiative and the Bristol County JDAI Initiative. He resides in North Dartmouth with his family.
