Last week’s vote by the Massachusetts Cultural Council designating a section of Fall River as it’s 50th cultural district is welcomed news for plans to revitalize the waterfront.
The push to create the Fall River Waterfront Cultural District was led by Creative Arts Network (CAN) co-founders Dave and Sandy Dennis.
The district boundary runs from Commonwealth Landing in the north, then south along the waterfront past Heritage State Park, past the Gates of the City, then makes its way up to Columbia Street to South Main.
Dave Dennis says with the designation come opportunities for the city and local residents to take advantage of grants and other funding sources to improve the arts and culture of Fall River. CAN will oversee the management of the district to start, hoping to open up collaboration among arts groups.
There will be plans to celebrate the designation of the cultural district at a later date once COVID-19 restrictions become lessened.
