The city’s Special Charter Review Committee held another meeting this week looking to make recommendations on how to make the city’s foundational document better serve its residents.
Committee chair Rene Brown says since the committee has a short window to complete its work, it has shifted its focus.
Ms. Brown says at this week’s meeting the committee spent time discussing the selection of a city council president and vice president.
The committee is also looking to change the current language that disqualifies a resident from running for city council or school committee if she or he currently holds another job with the city.
The current charter, amended and passed by voters in 2017, called for the formation of this special committee to make recommendations on any changes. Ms. Brown says since its passage, there has been well-warranted criticism as to its effectiveness. She’s confident that despite a lot of work ahead, the committee will try its best to finish its work before its deadline in June.
The committee’s next meeting is this coming Monday at 5pm in Government Center. At that time the committee is expected to take up the issue of when a mayor takes a temporary leave of absence and procedures for when a mayor vacates office.
