Fall River was among two Massachusetts cities to be honored at WalkBoston’s 29th Annual Celebration March 18th. The event is designed to recognize municipalities, agencies, and organizations that have promoted a better walking environment within their communities. Fall River and Springfield were chosen to receive the Golden Shoe Award during yesterday’s ceremony in Boston.
The award recipients are made up of a diverse population with one goal: To offer, maintain, and promote walking paths to residents within their communities, in a bid to promote healthy living. There were numerous Fall River award recipients, among them: Representatives of the Friends of the Quequechan River Rail Trail; Partners for a Healthier Community; Bike Fall River, and the Southeastern Regional Planning and Economic Development District.
As an example of improved walking opportunities, Friends of the Quequechan River Rail Trail have been responsible for conducting clean-ups; providing path directional signs; maintenance, and advertising walking events throughout the community. City officials, in conjunction with the organizations and agencies that promote walking in Fall River, will continue on this path for years to come.
